Hardly anything about weather patterns today can be described as average. Rainfall, temperature levels, blizzards are either excessive or lacking. Part of the explanation for such erratic and excessive climate change can be seen in this chart showing variations in temperature levels and C02 concentrations between 1960 and 2010.

The overall trend is an upward curve for both surface temperature variation as well as for ocean heat. Until around 1980, the deviation of global surface temperature from the reference average was somewhat negative, whereas it has clearly moved above average since. A similar pattern can be seen with ocean heat content, which grew in the 1970s, then levelled off in the 1980s but which has surged since around 1990.

The curve in the middle, showing CO2 concentration in the atmosphere, describes one of the factors leading to rising temperature levels. Between 1960 and 2010, CO2 levels rose steadily. These indicators, provided by a number of experts in matters relating to the environment and climate change,

should be an eye-opener that urgent measures need to be taken to reduce CO2 emissions and thus mitigate global warming.
